MAKE THE FOYER GRAND

GREAT FOYERS

  MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION

Do not forget about the foyer. This is the first space guests will see when entering your home, and it should make a good first impression. The foyer or entrance hall sets the tone for the rest of the home.

Everyone loves a grand foyer! Whenever I watch the TV real estate shows, the home buyers always say: "we want a huge open foyer with a grand staircase."

I prefer when the foyer is a more formal space. This is where you really get to 'shine' and add the 'wow' factor. The focal point should be seen as you first enter the foyer. It can be a table with a large beautiful floral arrangement on it, an elegant painting, a gilded mirror, a painted accent wall, a grand staircase, or simply the breath taking view to the back yard from the entrance.

This foyer has great attention to details in the iron stair railings and large chandelier.

If your decorating budget is small for this area, then 'wow' guests with one beautiful statement piece. Use marble, wood, or stone for the flooring. Use crystals on the chandelier and wall light sconces. Incorporate architectural columns or wainscoting trim. Use refined furniture pieces for the table, chest, chairs, or bench; then add unique accessories. Since this is usually a smaller space, you may be able to splurge a little more on pricey items.

But remember, 'less is more' when decorating the foyer. Too many items will make the space feel cluttered and closed in. Make sure items left in the main foyer like shoes, coats, and mail are neatly placed away in drawers, closets, and storage chests.

Wow! I just loved the elements of marble, stone and black trim used in this Neo Classic style foyer I found on Zillow Digs.

This cozy foyer becomes more eclectic with a brick herringbone floor and French settee.

The view of the mountains in the backdrop can be seen from this open foyer, also found on Zillow Digs.

This beautiful chandelier is the main focal point in this grand foyer in one of my client's home.

The black granite tile floor mixes well with the inlaid hardwood.

    1. Dear Anonymous: I have often found that one tends to have a more casual foyer if it is small. However, you can still have a small foyer and make it inviting by painting one wall in an accent color. Hang a decorative mirror or painting on the wall, than put a floating 8 inch to 10 inch deep wood shelf on the wall right below the mirror. You can also hang a couple or wood corbels on the wall and lay a glass shelf on top of them, instead of the floating shelf. If the space is very small, you would want to keep the floor free of items.
