Antiqued Silver Chair

TAKE AN OLD CHAIR FROM DRAB TO FAB!

Refurbishing A Vintage Wooden Chair

There is a large demand today for refurbished vintage furniture pieces. Old furniture is repainted, faux finished, distressed and antiqued.

If you are just beginning to get your feet wet in vintage furniture redesign, then first start with a furniture piece that is simple and not costly. I lucked out when I discovered this old vintage chair at a local warehouse, with a price tag of only ten dollars.

Here are the steps I took to get the beautiful Antiqued Silver Finish on the chair:

(1) Sand the chair with a fine sanding paper or block. I used 180 grit sanding block. You might also want to put a mask protection over your face during the sanding process. Then wipe the chair surface with a clean cloth to get off any debris.

(2) Next, put a white primer on the chair. I just used an old latex interior primer I had on hand.

(3) When primer has dried, apply one to two coats of metallic silver brilliant spray paint. I used the Rust-Oleum Metallic Silver  spray paint from Home Depot. Lowes also has the same paint in the Valspar  brand. One can of spray paint should be enough.

(4) Let the chair dry overnight. Then use a dry brush to apply some Valspar Antiquing Glaze on the chair. Put a little glaze onto the brush and then dab the excess off on a paper towel or old newspaper. Brush on the glaze in small sections, and then use a damp soft cloth to rub off some of the glaze, leaving more of the dark glaze in some spots. This part of the process can get messy, so be patient.

(5) Let the antiquing glaze dry overnight. Then add a coat of MinWax Paste Finishing Wax, in the natural color, over the entire chair. Let the wax dry for a few hours, then wipe and buff the chair with a soft clean cloth.

(6) I used a fabric remnant I already had on hand to reupholster the seat, while adding new foam wrapped in batting.

I discovered a 'great find' with this vintage chair for a few dollars, turning it into this chic and beautiful chair in an antiqued silver finish.

First I applied a coat of bright silver spray paint, then let it dry overnight and brushed on the dark antiquing glaze, before putting on a clear wax finish to seal it.

All the products needed can be purchased at the local Lowes Store, Home Depot Store, or online. There will be plenty of antiquing glaze and wax leftover for your next project.
