PEDESTALS AS ACCENT PIECES

PEDESTALS ADD GRANDEUR

USING PEDESTALS AND PLANT STANDS

   Put It On Display

I am working with two different clients that are both wanting to add a pedestal stand to the area I am designing in their homes. One client has contemporary furnishings, while the other likes the very traditional style.

The contemporary client already has all the other furniture and accessories in the dining room where the pedestal is going. So, in her case, I will need to select a pedestal stand that not only is large enough to hold her cherished tall beautiful gold etched vase, but will flow with the color and style of the furniture, rug, and accessories in the space.

This pedestal should be 36 inches to 42 inches tall with a top area that is 14 inches to 18 inches wide. Since her vase is very tall and oversized, we can use a shorter pedestal. Normally, I would prefer the height on the pedestal to be 42 inches to 48 inches tall. Your minimum height on a floor pedestal stand should always be 36 inches. It is better to have the overall height of the urn, statue, vase, fern, plus pedestal to be taller than the 30 inch high dining table.

Since it will be hard to match wood finishes for this room, I will be shopping for a black, gold, or cream color pedestal. It can be a square pedestal; or better yet a round pedestal to match the circles in the contemporary rug in the room. Other styles that will go well in a contemporary design are Art Deco, Neo Classic, Greek Key, fluted stone, or a sleek round wood or metal pedestal stand. The pedestal should have simple design details and not too ornate.

The other client likes a more traditional, ornate and gilded décor style. Her space is not yet furnished. So, we can choose any pedestal we like, and then choose the other design pieces for the room afterwards. I will shop for something with carvings, like an Oriental wood pedestal or a cast stone like pedestal with lots of details. I may even decide to do a plant stand pedestal with a fern, or a beautiful floral arrangement in an urn on top.

There are also smaller stands and pedestals that can be used on a table top, bookcase shelf, or ledge to display an item of importance. This gives the item height, grandeur, and emphasis.

This pair of marble top metal pedestals adds a Neo Classical touch.

Stone fluted pedestals are great for displaying Roman style urns

I did a tropical floral arrangement to go in the stone urn on this limestone pedestal. Always do the florals in a separate container and then sit it over into the actual urn.

I just love the black antiqued mirror pedestal from John-Richard
that I chose to display this Greek bust.

In this foyer I used a pair of elegant gold leaf mirrored Decorative Crafts'  pedestals on either side of the front door to display a simple large vase with yellow floral stems.

To make this small foyer more welcoming, I placed an urn with greenery on a pedestal in the corner.

Use this pair of pedestals and urns indoors for an outside look.
